Litter-free Kohima Campaign (2021–2023)

The Litter-Free Kohima campaign (2021–2023) was a landmark initiative that moved beyond episodic clean-up drives to establish a sustained, operational presence in the capital city’s busiest commercial zones. By partnering with the Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL), Zub Zub India successfully operationalized a model that prioritized consistent street-level intervention, public behavioral change, and institutional accountability.

The Mechanics of the Campaign: A Sustained Presence

While many urban cleanliness efforts rely on periodic "mass drives," this campaign was defined by its longevity and daily commitment. By operating consistently for 21 months, the initiative aimed to normalize cleanliness as a standard urban experience rather than a one-off event.

  • High-Traffic Corridor Focus: The operational team covered the city's most congested arteries—from BOC to Mohonkhola, Marty’s Park, TCP Gate, and Razou Point, through to High School Junction. These stretches serve as the heartbeat of Kohima’s economy and pedestrian movement, making them the most critical areas to maintain to ensure the highest impact on public perception.

  • Operational Discipline: Operating daily from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, the team performed essential sanitation tasks, including manual street cleaning, footpath maintenance, and drainage clearing. This visible presence served as a constant reminder to citizens that their city was being actively cared for, which in turn challenged them to reconsider their own disposal habits.

  • Beyond Cleaning – An Educational Mandate: A core pillar of the daily operation was Direct Engagement. Teams actively interacted with shopkeepers, transport operators, and pedestrians to provide on-the-spot education regarding waste segregation, the use of designated bins, and the environmental impact of littering.

Shifting the Narrative: From "Municipal Duty" to "Civic Sense"

The most significant impact of the campaign was its influence on Kohima’s social consciousness. Zub Zub India worked to dismantle the deeply ingrained idea that cleanliness is solely the responsibility of the municipal council.

  • Cultivating Ownership: By maintaining a persistent presence, the campaign encouraged local businesses to take accountability for the waste generated in front of their premises. This shifted the dynamic from passive littering to proactive maintenance.

  • A Multi-Stakeholder Partnership: The project served as a practical blueprint for future governance, where KSCDL provided the institutional support and financial backing, while Zub Zub India served as the agile, on-ground implementation partner. This synergy allowed for rapid adaptation to on-ground challenges that a purely bureaucratic or purely volunteer-based approach might have missed.

Legacy and Future Impact

The Litter-Free Kohima campaign served as the foundational bedrock for Zub Zub India’s subsequent evolution. By demonstrating that behavioral change can be engineered through consistent, data-driven, and community-led operations, the campaign directly paved the way for:

  • Expanded IEC (Information, Education, and Communication): Future initiatives that focused on household-level waste segregation and air quality awareness.

  • Institutional Credibility: The project solidified Zub Zub India's reputation as the state’s primary implementation partner for large-scale environmental sanitation, enabling them to lead major initiatives during events like the 25th Hornbill Festival and the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

Today, the lessons learned from those 21 months of street-level advocacy remain central to Zub Zub India’s mission—proving that when a city decides to invest in persistent community engagement, it can indeed transform the "out of sight, out of mind" attitude toward waste into a culture of active, daily stewardship.
