The Forest Colony Initiative

In October 2023, following our city-wide awareness drive, Zub Zub India and the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) launched Phase II of our IEC initiative. We focused our efforts on Forest Colony, which falls under Ward 17, a ward already officially recognized as the cleanest in Kohima. Building upon this existing foundation of excellence, our objective was to leverage the strong leadership within this community to establish a truly circular, community-led waste management blueprint.

The gold standard of community leadership
It is important to emphasize that the success of this model was driven by a level of leadership and cooperation that went beyond outstanding when compared to the broader city landscape. The residents and the local council of Forest Colony, acting as a cornerstone, displayed a proactive, unified commitment to the project that was unparalleled.

  • Unmatched collective responsibility: The internal coordination within the colony was seamless; residents were not merely participating, they were actively refining the process. This level of community buy-in and leadership allowed us to implement complex systems, like the youth-led collection network, with a speed and efficiency we had not seen elsewhere in the city.

  • Proactive engagement: The colony leaders did not just respond to our guidance; they anticipated the needs of the system, ensuring that waste streams were managed at the Panchayat level with meticulous care. This spirit of ownership transformed the colony into a living, breathing model of urban hygiene.

The mechanics of a circular ward
The Forest Colony project moved beyond standard awareness to implement a structured, circular waste management system that diverted recyclables away from the landfill and back into the community.

  • Structured community collection: We empowered the local youth to serve as the backbone of the collection system. Residents were encouraged to hold onto clean recyclables and reusable items, which were then collected on a weekly basis by youth volunteers.

  • Centralized sorting at the Panchayat: All collected materials were brought to the Forest Colony Panchayat. This central hub functioned as a sorting facility, ensuring that materials were handled systematically rather than being discarded.

  • Redirecting waste streams:

    • Recyclables: Handled through a local kabari wala (waste dealer) network, ensuring these materials were effectively channeled into the recycling industry.

    • Reusable goods: Items such as clothing, books, and household goods were donated to the Zub Zub Waste Center. From there, these items were either redistributed through donations or upcycled, ensuring they were given a "second life" instead of ending up as landfill waste.

Building a replicable blueprint
This initiative was designed to create a replicable blueprint for urban sanitation. By documenting the success of Forest Colony’s extraordinary leadership, we have created a model for the rest of Kohima to follow. This initiative proves that when a community unites with clear purpose and proactive leadership, they can elevate a well-performing ward into a beacon of sustainability for the entire city.
