Transforming Kohima’s Waste Ecosystem
In August 2023, Zub Zub India, in collaboration with the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), launched an intensive, city-wide outreach project to strengthen the foundation of waste management in Kohima. This was not just an awareness drive; it was a targeted effort to bridge the widening gap between the city's waste management infrastructure and the daily disposal practices of its residents.
The challenge: The last mile of waste management While municipal systems provide the backbone for city hygiene, their effectiveness is often bottlenecked at the "last mile"—the household doorstep. In a city as geographically and socially diverse as Kohima, a one-size-fits-all policy often fails to resonate. Recognizing this, we went directly to the residents to understand not just what they knew about waste, but how they actually managed it, and why the current system was or was not working for them.
Our strategy: Education, mediation, and real-time solutions Our engagement was built on three foundational pillars, designed to turn every household into an active partner in Kohima’s health:
Hands-on education: We moved past generic lectures and pamphlets. Our teams worked alongside families to conduct practical, on-the-spot demonstrations of source segregation. By helping residents identify and physically separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, we turned abstract rules into a daily domestic habit.
The mediator’s advantage: We acted as a critical conduit between the citizens and the KMC. Our teams spent countless hours listening to the grievances and practical hurdles residents face daily—ranging from collection timing inconsistencies to accessibility challenges in dense, hilly colonies. By feeding this ground-level intelligence directly to the municipal council, we empowered authorities to move toward more responsive, data-driven service delivery.
Cultivating a culture of civic sense: Our ultimate goal was to transition the city from a culture of compliance (where people follow rules to avoid penalties) to one of civic sense (where residents take genuine pride in maintaining their ward). By treating waste management as a shared environmental responsibility, we fostered a sense of collective ownership over Kohima’s streets and air.
Building a sustainable legacy
This campaign transformed the way the city interacts with its own waste. By humanizing the municipal system and giving citizens a voice, we moved beyond temporary cleaning drives and toward a resilient, cooperative waste management model. Every household visited was not just educated; they were integrated into a city-wide movement to ensure Kohima remains cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable for the future.
